Career Life Planning |
|
Planning your future career path, educational training and life goals can make all the difference between going down the tubes or up the ladder. This class will study your interests and skills to help you identify a career cluster(s) and allow you to design a plan for success that fits your goals. The class will also touch on those “unknown” responsibilities required of students that come with turning 18. The topics to be included are building a credit history, setting up your first apartment and making decisions you can live with. Grade 10 Credit ½ |
Design Studio I |
Basic knowledge of fabrics and fibers, color, design and related concepts will be used to explore the world of apparel and interior design. Approximately 12 weeks of bookwork will be followed with student identified project work, based upon ability and interests. Careers studied will be retail, visual display, marketing, apparel design, and construction, textile research and interior design. Grade 10-12 Credit 1 |
Food Service |
Food creation and production will be the focus of this class, which will explore the food industry through a work-learning framework. Basic food health and science concerns will be stressed as will the exploration of careers to include catering, restaurant management, food creation and related food services. Students enrolled will be expected to select and produce concession stand food, cater school- related functions and develop foods for competitions and contests. A nutrition and wellness unit (*see Youth Community Leadership or Nutrition and Fitness) must have been taken before enrollment. Grade 11-12 Credit ½ |
Nutrition & Fitness |
Are you what you eat? Is body image linked to our nutrition and fitness level? Can what I eat affect my sports performance? How do I change my body weight the healthy way? The answers to these and other concerns of teens today will be included in this newly revamped course. Topics will include setting personal nutrition and/or fitness goals, developing a plan of action, learning how to read your body in order to lose or gain weight, study the eating disorders that have resulted from being “afraid to eat” and really looking hard at the foods available to us to make healthy choices. Grade 9-12 Credit ½ |
Parenting 101 |
What does it take to be a good parent? How do children develop into successful people? These questions and more will be explored as the world of children is opened. Topics to be discussed are the roles of responsible parents, the importance of fathers and mothers, the financial obligations and emotional requirements on parents. Observations of preschool and elementary children will be a part of this class, as will a trip to a delivery facility, day care and the “baby think it over” activity. Grade 10-12 Credit ½ |
Youth Community Leadership |
Learn about your community and make a real difference at the same time. Take control of your future by learning about and carrying out class-selected projects to benefit you self, your school, your family or your community to become a Family Community Leadership “certified leader.” The conclusion of the year will be spent applying the skills. The remainder of the class will build upon the interests of the class as the courses of study (each 6 weeks in length) will be selected by the students. Those enrolled can select from the topics of housing design, job preparation and career exploration, children’s nutrition, American cuisine, entrepreneurship, community service, families first and creative design Grade 9-10 Credit 1 |
